The Special Effects Contact Lens: Creating Eye-popping Possibilities

The special effects contact lens is usually used in the theater, movies, or for special occasions such as Halloween. These lenses, often referred to as novelty lenses, are generally available without a prescription as they do not offer any type of vision correction.

However, many retailers will require some sort of medial waiver or notification stating that the purchaser has a "clean bill of health" and is able to safely wear contact lenses. This is particularly true in countries such as the United States where a prescription is needed even for plano lenses, which are lenses with no power.

The special effects contact lens should be handled carefully, which includes regular cleanings and proper storage. Hands should be washed using soap and warm water, and then thoroughly rinsed before handling any type of contact lenses. If possible, avoid smoke, chlorine, and exposure to pollutants or known allergens while wearing lenses to minimize irritation or discomfort.

Special effects contact lenses offer eye-catching effects and a wide variety of designs to choose from. While it may be fun to try on different colors and experiment with different looks and styles, sharing contacts with another person is never a good idea. Doing so may actually result in serious infections that could possibly lead to permanent eye damage or even blindness.

Another type of special effects contact lens doesn't really change the actual color of the eye, but instead creates a reflection of light causing a pearlescent quality. These lenses are disposable and offer a dazzling silver, bronze, or gold twinkling effect when worn. Patterns on the lenses that rest on the part of eye nearest the pupil capture and reflect light while allowing your natural eye color to show through. A darker ring on the outside perimeter of the contact allows for the appearance of extra depth and high definition.

Here are just some of the literally hundreds of creative designs that can be found on a special effects contact lens:

  • Flowers such as daisies and shamrocks
  • Celestial designs such as suns, moons, and stars
  • A rainbow of solid colors including gray, black, and white
  • Lenses with symbols such as a smiley face or peace sign
  • Lenses with an alien theme
  • "Monster" designs such as zombies, vampires, devils, and ghosts
  • Contact lenses with holiday designs such as Christmas trees, patriotic flags, pumpkins, and spider webs
  • A collection of contacts in varying colors that resemble "cat" eyes
  • Lenses that resemble the eyes of a reptile in varying colors
  • Specially designed theatrical lenses that are usually hand painted and are often used for horror films
  • Lenses that resemble the eyes of a wolf, or some other type of animal or insect
  • Lenses that appear to glow in the dark
  • Lenses with licensed or trademarked characters from movies, television, music, and sports, just to name a few venues

While it may not be wise to show up for work wearing black zombie lenses, the special effects contact lens can be great fun, and it can be also used to create a dizzying array of unique looks and interesting, eye-popping effects.
