There is a huge array of contact lens care products available today. The question
is which products should you use and how do you use these products. It is essential
to use the right products in the right manner. Not doing so may lead to infections
in the eye.
There is good news, however. Today, contact lens care is easier than ever.
With the advent of multipurpose contact lens care products and disposable contact
lenses, caring for your contact lenses is not time consuming anymore.
It is important to note that switching contact lens care products should be
done only after consulting your eye doctor. Some contact lens care products
are incompatible with each other or/and with your lens. Using such products
can harm the contact lens and possibly lead to eye infections.
To better understand how to use lens care products, understanding the steps
involved in lens care is essential.
The basics of contact lens care involve rinsing, cleaning and disinfecting.
- The first step involves washing hands thoroughly to keep them free from
germs when cleaning your lenses. Moisturizing soaps must be avoided and hands
can be dried with a lint free towel.
- The next step is cleaning the lens. Some products involve rubbing the lens
in the palm of your hand. Others need just rinsing of the lens with the solution.
Cleaning removes eye build up and discomfort due to cosmetics. Left to itself,
such cosmetics impair lens comfort greatly.
- The third step involves rinsing the lens again to remove the debris. The
recommended time must be taken to remove the debris and rinse. This is an
important step.
- The fourth step involves placing the lens in its holder and filling it with
the disinfectant solution. This is an essential step as it helps destroy microorganisms
that would otherwise irritate the eyes and possibly cause an infection.
- Clean both the lenses in this manner.
You may also need a product for protein removal. This depends on what kind of
contact lenses you wear and how much protein your eyes deposit on the lenses.
Cleaning lenses does remove some protein but it can still build up and cause
irritation. If you replace your lens once a year you are most likely to need
a protein remover. People who wear disposable lenses are not likely to need
protein remover. Products for protein removal include enzymatic cleaner and
daily protein removal liquids.
Eye dryness and irritation can be tackled by using contact lens eyedrops that
wet the eyes and lubricate the lenses. If you develop an allergy to the chemicals
in lens care products, you need to shift to preservative free products.
