The Colored Contact Lens: A Colorful Rainbow Of Choices

With such a wide selection available, contact lens wearers can easily be overwhelmed with the myriad of choices on the market today. Many people find it difficult to choose between all of the varying shades and hues. However, it's easy to narrow down the options by simply deciding which category you belong to; bold and dramatic, or natural and subtle.

Ideas for bold and dramatic coloured contact lenses include:

  • Brown eyes changed to blue, amethyst or green
  • Choosing a lens colour opposite of your normal eye make-up colour
  • Choosing bold, noticeable colours such as violet, amethyst or aquamarine

Ideas for natural and subtle coloured contact lenses include:

  • Blue eyes changed to various shades of green or gray
  • Choosing a coloured contact that only enhances and defines the edge of the iris
  • Choosing a colour that closely matches your skin tone, hair colour, make-up style, and natural eye colour

If you absolutely cannot decide on just one colour, or want a variety of looks to choose from, consider disposable coloured contact lenses. These lenses can be worn on varying schedules such as daily, weekly, and monthly.

If you'll be wearing coloured contact lenses on a daily basis, choosing a shade close to your real eye colour will provide a subtle enhancement that's natural, but that is still slightly noticeable. If you have a special event to attend, consider opting for a dramatic, eye-catching colour that somehow matches the occasion, or perhaps even your outfit for a truly unique fashion statement.

Common colour options include:

  • Blues: Aquamarine, baby blue, deep blue, light and dark blue, royal blue, sapphire
  • Browns: Hazel, honey, light and dark brown
  • Greens: Emerald, evergreen, light and dark green, sea green, turquoise
  • Miscellaneous: Black or gray, costume, theatrical, or personalized designs
  • Purples: Amethyst, lilac, purple, violet

How to care for coloured contact lenses

As with any type of contact lenses, always wash your hands before touching a coloured contact lens. Lenses will be shipped in containers that have been factory sealed to ensure sterility, so be sure to have a clean storage case and solution ready before opening the containers.

Disadvantages of the coloured contact lens

Disadvantages of coloured contact lenses are minimal, and persistent problems should be addressed with an eye doctor. Since the pupil changes in size to accommodate varying levels of light, there are times when vision may be slightly affected by wearing a coloured contact lens. For example, at night the pupil is larger to allow more light in, however it may be larger than the clear center of the contact resulting in vision changes that can be easily corrected with a different sized lens.

Although your coloured lenses should be sized to fit your individual eye, there may be some occasions, such as while blinking, when the contact may move around. The coloured portion of the contact may slide over the pupil exposing the actual colour of the iris. Provided your contacts are measured correctly, keeping your lenses well lubricated, and your eyes well moisturized should alleviate this problem.
